According to figures published in October, more people than ever before are taking part in an apprenticeship

Nearly 860,000 people were on an apprenticeship in 2012/13 with the gold standard of higher and advanced levels attracting record levels of apprentices.

The data also shows that there were over 1.5 million apprenticeship starts since 2010.

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock said:

"These figures show that a record 858,900 people participated in apprenticeships last year, which is almost 370,000 more than in 2009/10.

This is good news for the economy, and good news for those getting the skills they need to prosper. There are now more options than ever before with a focus on the quality and rigour that people and employers want from apprenticeships."

The Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16 to 24 year olds (AGE 16 to 24) has been extended for a further year until December 2014.

AGE 16 to 24 has already helped thousands of employers to grow their business by employing apprentices and now employers have more time to claim up to ten Apprenticeship grants. AGE 16 to 24 is aimed at supporting businesses to grow by employing young people through the Apprenticeship programme. AGE provides grants to employers to support them to do this.

OECD Report highlights the risks for youngsters without qualifications

The poorly educated are paying the highest price for the financial crisis, says the OECD. Youngsters without qualifications now face a shrinking chance of getting jobs, according to the economic think tank's annual review of education.

For the UK, the OECD warns of the "significant" numbers of youngsters outside of education, work or training. This is the "biggest challenge" for the UK, says Mr Schleicher. According to the OECD's figures for 2011, people aged between 15 and 29 in the UK spend on average 2.3 years unemployed, compared with 1.7 years in Germany and 1.1 years in the Netherlands.

The report warns that too many youngsters in the UK drop out of education and are left without skills needed to get jobs.
