Data Technician : THE ROLE

The broad purpose of the occupation is to source, format and present data securely in a relevant way for analysis using basic methods; to communicate outcomes appropriate to the audience; analyse structured and unstructured data to support business outcomes; blend data from multiple sources as directed and apply legal and ethical principles when manipulating data. An employee needs to have access to data, to understand the importance of data to their organisation

and handle it accordingly, with an awareness of how the data was collected and how it is likely to be used. Employees in any data-oriented role should keep abreast of developments in digital technologies such as Internet of Things and Generative Artificial Intelligence , with their implications on data volume and data quality as well as potential uses or mis-uses. A data-focused employee needs to be aware of the potential harm to an organisation's reputation if data is found to be handled

inappropriately.

    • Legislation and its application to the safe use of data including ethical use of data and Artificial intelligence (AI) systems
    • Types of data and their use including common sources of data
    • Data storage formats and their importance for analysis
    • Data element format and their impact on precision, analysis and communication
    • Principles of accessing, extracting, collating and formatting data including anonymising data
    • Communication tools and technologies , methods, formats and techniques to share and present data findings.
    • Common data quality issues and validation of data
    • The relationship between data, machine learning, Internet of Things, Artificial intelligence and generative AI
    • Sustainable data practices
  • What's Involved

    • On the job skills training
    • Off the job skills training
    • Level 2 Functional Skills in English & Maths
    • Support with building portfolio
    • Planning, Target Setting and Feedback
    • Mock End Point Assessments

    End Point Assessment (after at least 8 months and successful

    completion of the above-complete the activities in any order):

    • 90 min Scenario demonstration with questioning
    • 60 minute Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolioof evidence based on the portfolio submitted at Gateway

    leading to the certificate as a Pass, Merit or Distinction.



  • Knowledge and Skills

    This occupation is found in any employer in any sector. In their daily work, an employee in

    this occupation interacts with a wide range of stakeholders including colleagues,

    managers, customers and internal and external suppliers. They would typically work as a member of a team; this may be office based or virtual. An employee in this occupation will be responsible for collecting and processing data under the guidance of a senior colleague or multiple colleagues across the business. This may vary by sector and size of the organisation. An employee would mainly be responsible for their own work but may have the opportunity to mentor others


Duration

This Apprenticeship is typically completed in 16 months.

Delivery

Delivered online with remote support from Rewards Training throughout the apprenticeship.

Progression

The Learning & Skills Mentor could progress further within their vocation specialism and/or into roles involving the assessment and coaching of vocational learners. They may also be eligible to progress onto a full teaching role within an education and training provider organisation.
