HEALTHCARE SUPPORT WORKER: THE ROLE

Healthcare support workers work as part of a team providing high quality and compassionate care to individuals. You will carry out well-defined, routine clinical duties such as checking blood pressure, temperature or weight. You will be able to support individuals with long term conditions, frailty, end of life care, and identify and respond to signs of pain or discomfort. You may also help individuals eat, drink, wash and check on their overall progress, comfort and wellbeing. There will also be non-clinical duties such as keeping records, making beds, tidying up the work area, and returning or cleaning equipment used during clinical activity.

ABOUT THIS APPRENTICESHIP

This apprenticeship is for you if you want a role including clinical support responsibilities with typical job titles being Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Support Worker, Nursing Assistant and Nursing Auxiliary.



Healthcare support workers’ can work in a range of healthcare settings which may include hospitals, community clinics or health centres, individuals’ homes, nursing/care homes, hospices, mental health settings and GP surgeries. Your team may include workers from both health and social care. You will report to a registered healthcare practitioner who will directly or indirectly supervise your work.

  • Qualification Topics

    • The role of the health & social care worker— main tasks and responsibilities in order to support and promote an individual’s physical health; dealing with dementia, cognitive issues and mental health; recognising signs of deterioration; basic life support; and physiological measurements.
    • Communication in health & social care settings — with individuals, their families, carers and healthcare practitioners.
    • The right values and behaviours, including the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion — the person centred approach to care.
    • Health, safety and security — Duty of Care; Infection prevention and control;
    • Safeguarding and Information protection; Moving and handling; Relevant statutory standards and codes.

    • The Care Certificate
    • Level 1 & Level 2 Functional Skills in English & Maths
    • Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check
    • On the Job Training and Ongoing Assessment
    • Self Assessment (including a portfolio of evidence)
    • Mock End Point Assessment
    • End Point Assessment (after at least 12 months): Multiple-choice test, Practical Observation, Review of Evidence Portfolio and Interview leading to the Apprenticeship achievement certificate (Pass, Merit or Distinction)

Duration

This Apprenticeship is typically completed in 13 months.

Delivery

Delivered online with remote support from Rewards Training throughout the apprenticeship.
